f you've ever wondered what it would be like to swim in warm water up to 40 meters below the surface, there exists in Italy a pool ready to satisfy your curiosity..

Dubbed Y-40 The Deep Joy, this swimming pool can be found in the regional natural park of the Euganean Hills, Italy. Weird name? Y-40 is said to originate from mathematic symbols, with Y representing the vertical axis and -40 representing 40 meters below the surface, a world record for pool depth.

Supported by the Boaretto Group Hotel and Resort, this project was the brainchild of renowned architect Emanuele Boaretto, who reportedly came up with the idea to cover the pool with lawn “to cleverly include the structure into its environment congruously”. It is positioned at the Hotel Millepini Terme in Montegrotto Terme, a small town in Italy largely devoted to leisure  diving.

The pool also boasts various special depths for technical underwater scuba diving, an underwater tunnel and viewing panels that enable visitors to enjoy the underwater scenery without getting wet. (Y-40/-)

As it is filled with 4,300 square meters of warm, thermal spa water at a temperature of 32-34°C, guests won’t feel cold in this pool. In this condition, swimmers don’t even need to wear a wet suit as they swim or dive—although diving equipment may still be needed by some if they want to reach the lower depths.

The pool is 40 meters deep—equal to a 12- or 13-story building— with a 21 x 18 m surface area. It also boasts various special depths for technical underwater scuba diving, an underwater tunnel and viewing panels that enable visitors to enjoy the underwater scenery without getting wet.
