documentary on the legendary British naval officer William Bligh during an expedition on HMS Bounty to the South Pacific will include filming on Koepan Beach in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), where the ship was stranded back in 1789.
Dubbed Mutiny, the film is produced by PT. Media Nusantara Films and Jungle Run Production in cooperation with UK-based Windfall Films.
"Initially there were two options in terms of filming location: Kupang and Dili in Timor Leste. But Windfall Films finally chose Kupang as the more appropriate location for the documentary," said PT Media Nusantara Films & Jungle Run Productions assistant producer Desak Hartati told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.
The movie is expected to boost tourism in Kupang once it is screened on UK television and around the world. "We are very thankful for the great response and support from the Kupang mayor," said Desak, adding that the film crew would probably arrive in the city on Sept. 26, after sailing from Australia.
The filming in Kupang will feature scenes of Bligh and his crew visiting the beach on a longboat to find supplies and then go back to their ship, following an encounter with the locals.
At least five films inspired by William Bligh’s voyages have been made since 1916, including The Bounty (1984) starring Anthony Hopkins as Lieutenant William Bligh and Mel Gibson as Bligh's former close friend, Fletcher Christian. (kes)
