V series are addictive. With several episodes in a season, TV series establish intricate universes, absorbing those of us who follow them. Some series like Game of Thrones or How I Met Your Mother have received so much attention that they have shaped pop-culture with humorous references on the internet that only a watcher could “get.”
Not to worry, here are some highly popular TV series of which you can still catch up, even if for just the sake of understanding those memes.
Stranger Things
Season: 1
Number of episodes: 8
Stranger Things is undoubtedly the "it" TV series, at least since its release in July. With 1980s music, the show is a homage to the Stephen King-esque horror that we both love and fear. The cast is solid with names like Winona Ryder and adorable child actors Millie Bobby Brown, as Eleven, and Gaten Matarazzo, as Dustin Henderson. Watch this with lots of popcorn and a blanket -- just in case you need to hide.
Narcos
Season: 2
Number of episodes: 10 per season
If you got on the Breaking Bad hype-train too late, watch Narcos. It tells the story of the notorious Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria (you’ll remember his full name after binge watching the series throughout the weekend). Narcos portrays how Pablo Escobar built his empire, the state of cartel-controlled Colombia, and what led to its downfall. Escobar’s story has inspired books and movies, most notably News of a Kidnapping (1998) written by Gabriel García Márquez.
The Flash
Season: 2
Number of episodes: 23 per season
Now is the perfect time to catch up with The Flash (watching, not running), as its season three will air on Oct. 4. Those who consider Marvel humor superior to DC might think twice as The Flash is lighter and brighter than DC movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. The series follows Barry Allen who was struck by lightning only to wake up with abs and super speed. The Flash sometimes receives visits from other superheroes in the same universe, Green Arrow and Supergirl, enriching your superhero knowledge.

House of Cards
Season: 4
Number of episodes: 13
Tired of the endless political drama? Follow the story of Frank Underwood, portrayed by Kevin Spacey, your typical scheming Washington politician and his wife, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). The drama in House of Cards is eerily parallel to what happens in real life. The series has won nominations and awards and continues to surprise watchers with its intricate story line.
Mr. Robot
Season: 2
Number of episodes: 22 (in total)
Mr. Robot is not actually about robots but rather a human hacker Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek). The show won two Golden Globes in 2016 for Best Drama and Best Supporting Role by Christian Slater, Mr. Robot himself. The show has received praise for its portrayal of realistic hacking scenes while simultaneously crafting an intoxicating story line. (kes)
