efrain from feeling bad if you don’t know exactly how to dance the PPAP (Pen Pineapple Apple Pen) or can’t even figure out what the video is all about.

The phenomenon of viral dances has been around since John Travolta discoed and pointed his finger in Saturday Night Fever and when Michael Jackson turned into a dancing zombie in Thriller.

The phenomenon shows no sign of stopping, so here are our picks of legendary viral dances that broke the TV and internet. Remember to dance like nobody’s watching!

Macarena

Back in 1993, the one-hit wonder “Macarena” was everywhere. It was even banned in several schools across the US as the provocative dance to the song by Los del Rio was deemed too sexy. The song won the Billboard Music Award for Top Hot 100 Song and was rerecorded several times, including a child-friendly version by Sesame Street

Aserejé

Spanish pop group Las Ketchup popularized “The Ketchup Song” (Aserejé) in 2002 along with moves that sent the world into a viral dance frenzy. The song became controversial as there were rumors about it being linked to satanism. However, that did not stop the group from winning the NRJ Music Award for International Song of the Year and the NME Award for Worst Single.

Gangnam Style

Korean singing and dancing sensation Psy shattered the year 2012 with his megahit “Gangnam Style”, which featured several “horsing around” moves and attracted 2.7 billion views on YouTube.

Psy won multiple awards for “Gangnam Style”, including the World Music Award for World’s Best Video in 2014, Billboard Music Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song 2013, Billboard Music Award for Top Rap Song 2013 and YouTube Music Awards YouTube Phenomenon 2013. His most recent video, “Daddy”, has garnered 200 million views on YouTube in less than a year.

Whip Nae Nae

The “Whip Nae Nae” dance was popularized by rapper Silento in 2015 and gained instant recognition from those who spend time on YouTube. Silento made his mark online when he won the Billboard Music Award for Top Streaming Song (Video) and for his dance moves when he won the Soul Train Music Award for Best Dance Performance.
