he University of Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with the West Java town of Depok and cosmetics company CV Cahaya Multi Mandiri has introduced beauty products based on the star fruit.
The Belimbing Island line of products includes a facial serum, a scrub, a moisturizer and soap.
Made from star fruit extract, the products are the result of research conducted by UI's pharmaceutical faculty dean Mahdi Jufri. “I started the star fruit extract formulation research in 2012,” he said as quoted by the university's newsroom. “Star fruits are good for beauty products because they are rich in antioxidant and vitamin C.”

The product uses extracts of the Averrhoa carambola L plant as its main ingredient. The fruit can easily be found across Depok and is larger in size, with sweeter flesh and a longer lifetime than other star fruit species.
Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris expressed his support for the research. "This innovation will help promote star fruit as the city's icon and as a unique food from Depok." (kes)
