he government is set to nominate Ambon in Maluku for the title of UNESCO “City of Music” on Oct. 29, said the city's acting mayor on Monday.
Ambon's acting Mayor Frans Johanes Papilaya told Antara news agency that the move aimed to make music a tool to develop a better city and increase the people's welfare. The proposal will be led by Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) head Triawan Munaf.
"We have also received support from the City Council. The council has allowed us to prepare the necessary programs," said Frans.

Following consultation and discussions with the city administration, stakeholders, musicians, artistic communities and art-related businessmen, an action plan to pursue the title has been created.
"It consists of five pillars: musicians and community, infrastructure, learning processes, industry development and social-cultural values," he added.
The City of Music appellation is part of UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. The network aims to "offer unparalleled opportunities for cities to draw in peer learning processes and collaborative projects in order to fully capitalize on creative assets".
In addition to music, the network also supports other creative industries such as craft and folk art, design, film, culinary businesses, literature and media arts. (mra/kes)
