University prepares to welcome US pageant-winning student

The Islamic University of North Sumatra (UISU) plans to throw a vibrant welcome for Ariska Putri Pertiwi following news that its student won the Miss Grand International 2016 pageant in Las Vegas, the US, on Tuesday.

he Islamic University of North Sumatra (UISU) plans to throw a vibrant welcome for Ariska Putri Pertiwi following news that its student won the Miss Grand International 2016 pageant in Las Vegas, the US, on Tuesday. 

UISU’s School of Medicine first dean assistant Tri Makmur told The Jakarta Post that Ariska’s accomplishment brought glory not only to the university but also to Indonesia. “We are very proud of her,” he said in Medan on Friday.

The school’s student executive body (BEM) head Akbar Amrizali Nasution said the students planned to welcome Ariska, who is part of the class of 2012 for medicine, at Kualanamu International Airport before marching to the campus on Jl. Sisingamangaraja, Medan. 

“We have coordinated [this plan] with Ariska, but we don’t know yet when she will be back from the US. We are still waiting for confirmation,” said Akbar.

Ariska was named Miss Grand International 2016 after outdoing contestants from the Philippines, Thailand, Puerto Rico and the US in the pageant’s final stage. She also won the Best National Costume title, wearing sparkling gold traditional attire from Lampung themed “Royal Sigokh”, designed by Dynand Fariz. (mas/kes)
