urakarta-based choreographer, dancer, film director and actor Sardono W. Kusumo is set to return with his renewed show Fabriek Fikr 2 (Factory of Thinking) involving dozens of artists, which he is slated to stage at the former Colomadu sugar mill in Karanganyar, Surakarta, Central Java, on Nov. 19 and 20.
Fabriek Fikr was performed once last November. So this year Sardono promises to showcase a more refined concept. Whereas the audience had only seen the final artworks of the artists last year, the show this weekend invites them to a “painting performance” to witness the live creative process of a dozen painters making art.
In addition to that, Sardono pointed out that the native Papuan people will demonstrate their traditional cooking to the public, which involves food being heated on hot stones and then buried underground.

The title of the show was itself derived from the role of the sugar mill in which the performances will take place. It was a pillar of the growth of 19th century industrialization on Java that gave birth to new ideas and, hence, helped the local economy flourish.
Aside from aiming to rekindle the spirit of such an enlightening time in history, the show also attempts to draw more public attention to infrastructural heritage. In fact, the old sugar factory will seem more lively and reanimated, as Sardono plans a video mapping attraction backed up by special lighting effects. (mra/kes)
