Review: 'Moana', not your typical Disney princess Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest film "Moana" presents an typical princess character. (Walt Disney Animation Studios' official website/File)

lthough most of us grew up watching Disney’s movies, perhaps not all of us are fond of the idea of fairytale princesses. Frozen’s main characters Anna and Elsa were seen to be revolutionary as they took their problems into their own hands. We’re glad to report that Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest film Moana is even better than Frozen.

Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Hercules, The Princess and the Frog), this animation film takes place in Motunui, a mystical Polynesian island. Moana (Alui’i Cravalho) is the island chief’s daughter. She has always been intrigued by the ocean, as a result of her grandmother’s tales. However, her father prohibits anyone from sailing beyond the reef.

This is where the conflict begins. Moana has to choose between listening to her father and following her heart.

After an unfortunate event occurs in the peaceful island, Moana jumps into the boat and sails away. She passes the reef accompanied by a not-so-smart rooster Hei Hei (Alan Tudyk) to find Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a demigod with shapeshifting powers.

The first part of the movie introduces viewers to Maui and Moana’s background stories. This slow-paced part of the plot is a bit tiresome. Luckily, it changes in the second half of the movie. The visually pleasing animation topped with a twist makes Moana an enjoyable film.

In addition to the storyline, there are many values presented in the movie. In the beginning, Moana seems like a typical Disney movie: princess, funny sidekick animals and an adventure. However, the plot proves otherwise.

Moana isn’t a strong-willed teenager who nonchalantly follows her heart. In fact, she is an obedient daughter who has tried to ignore her desires. Her adventure is based on what is good for others.

Although she’s the chief’s daughter, she wasn’t destined to save the island. The ocean chooses her because of her good heart, which means she creates her own fate.

At the same time, Maui is a demigod with a very human intention. He did something stupid in order to be accepted by others. These life lessons are relatable to both adults and children. Moana succeeds in entertainingly sharing these values.

All in all, Moana is a charming film to watch for both adults and kids. (kes)
