The Transportation Ministry has announced plans to hold a bus-honking contest relevant to the "Om Telolet Om" phenomenon.

“’Om Telolet Om’ is a phenomenon that puts bus transportation, which has been viewed dimly of late, back in the spotlight again,” the ministry's spokesperson, Bambang Ervan, told The Jakarta Post on Friday.

“This phenomenon is an opportunity to bring the transportation closer to the public. Therefore, it has to be strengthened with positive acts, with a contest as an example,” he added.

Bambang said the details were still being discussed and the ministry would carry out the plan after the Christmas and New Year holiday transportation period had passed.

The "Om Telolet Om" phenomenon, which originates from the phrase used by children in parts of Java to ask drivers to sound their bus horns, has gone viral on the internet and has even started being used in political campaigns. (kes)
