elected ASEAN professional golfers will compete against players from Asian and European countries in the Maybank Championship 2017, slated to take place on Feb. 9-12 at Saujana Golf and Country Club’s Palm Course in Malaysia.
Players from five ASEAN countries who are qualified to participate and strive for the US$3 million prize at the event are George Gandranata from Indonesia, Ye Thet Aung from Myanmar, Juvic Pagunsan from the Philippines, Koh Deng Shan from Singapore and Michael Tran from Vietnam.
“We are excited to welcome the five selected ASEAN players to the Maybank Championship next month,” Maybank chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor said in a press release.
“I have no doubt these players will take pride in being selected as representing the talent from their respective countries, and will bring their best game, which is very much in line with our commitment to enhance the standards of professionalism in this region.”

Regarding the venue, Maybank ASEAN ambassador Gavin Green said palm trees would offer a unique challenge for players. “[The palm trees] have a tendency to ‘catch’ golf balls,” he said, adding that players should focus on keeping tee shots in short grass as much as possible. “And playing more accurate iron shots. [And] not forgetting the short game and putting.”
Other golfers set to participate in the event are last year's winner Marcus Fraser from Australia, Rafa Cabrera Bello from Spain, Bernd Wiesberger from Austria, as well as Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat from Thailand.
Those who wish to watch the championship can enjoy free entry on Thursday and Friday, while weekend passes will be priced at RM 68 (US$15) per person. (kes)
