The minister’s meeting with Facebook is planned to be held by the end of this month. The discussion is reportedly to include ways to prevent the spread of hoaxes and stop them from going viral among social media users. Prior to meeting with Facebook, Rudiantara has discussed the matter with Twitter representatives.

Moreover, the government was reportedly considering imposing sanctions in the form of fees on social networks that were perceived to be failing to prevent the spread of false content.

“Germany plans to issue a regulation for a similar sanction of Rp 7 billon [US$ 523.99] per hoax,” said the minister. (wir/asw)
