ocal internet service provider FiberStar introduced Google Accelerator on Tuesday, a tool that can be connected with local networks at malls, hotels, universities and other institutions to enhance the user experience when viewing video content.

Google Accelerator can store more than 150,000 of the most popular YouTube videos in Indonesia on the local network, thereby allowing Indonesian users to play those videos -- which will be marked with a special icon -- right away, with minimum buffering. Aside from helping to reduce the bandwidth use in a certain area, the tool can also lure more visitors to both the YouTube site and areas where there is a high-speed connection to YouTube.

Thomas Dragono, the commercial director of PT Mega Akses Persada, which owns FiberStar, expressed his hope that the launch of Google Accelerator could set the stage for more high-speed internet connections in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Scott Dougall from Google’s Next Billion Users team voiced his joy in witnessing the development of the internet in Indonesia and the public’s fondness to watch videos online. "It's an honor for us to be able to cooperate with FiberStar as our first partner in Indonesia," he added in a press release.

According to a survey by the Association of Indonesian Internet Providers (APJII) in October, most Indonesians use the internet to access social media and entertainment websites, as well as for work, shopping and business.
