evoted sneakerheads don’t need to go far to hunt for their favorite sneakers as Jakarta is currently hosting the first Jakarta Sneaker Day, which aims to be a mass gathering for the capital’s sneaker enthusiasts.
Running until Saturday at The Hall in Senayan City Mall, the event features a bazaar, sneaker trading, door prize, talk show, competitions, exhibitions, auctions and music performances, among other things. The talk show, for example, will discuss various topics such as the sneaker community, history, fashion and investment, as well as sneaker culture in Indonesia.
“Some people may consider sneakers as a business opportunity. For instance, they buy them at a certain price, and several years later they sell them for a different price,” said a Jakarta Sneaker Day spokesperson, Danny.
Those in search of rare sneakers may get lucky as the event has collections of rare models, including the Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Red October”. Up to 47 tenants and nine community booths are available for visitors to stop by.
“The price is average,” said Danny. “I heard that someone bought a pair of Adidas Tubulars for just below Rp 1 million [US$75], while there’s also someone who got a pair of [Pharrell x Adidas NMD] Human Race for just Rp 5 million. It depends on the tenants.”

Danny says that Adidas Yeezy and NMD are currently gaining popularity in Indonesia. “Many people are looking for the NMD and Yeezy, but it seems that Indonesia also has many Jordan sneakers enthusiasts.”
People flocked to the first day of the event; some could be found visiting the main hall, while others chose to stay outside enjoying food and beverages or taking “wefies” in a provided section. One of the visitors, Raihan, said the event had been great so far as he had been able to purchase rare models. Another visitor, Kevin, was satisfied by the variety of tenants. “Today I’ve admired Adidas NMD and Yeezy. All of them can be found here," he said.
“Hopefully this event will continue, we don’t want this to be the first and last installment,” said Danny. “I hope it can be an annual event and not only in Jakarta, but also in Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Makassar.”
For those who want to head down to the event, entrance prices start from Rp 60,000. (kes)
