Google has introduced its newest artificial intelligence invention, a piano-playing bot named Al Duet.
The bot takes whatever melody the user plays and attempts to respond with a complimentary tune.
AI Duet is part of a campaign by Google’s Creative Labs division to help the public become familiar with artificial intelligence and all of its capabilities. AI Duet is not the only music-based bot that Google has been working on, but it is one of the first that has been made available to the public, according to The Verge.

The bot works by taking the notes you play on your keyboard and running them through a network that has been trained to find melodic and rhythmic patterns. As AI Duet understands certain musical concepts like time and key, it’s able to then generate its very own organic melodies that, in theory, will sound like a direct response to your own.
AI Duet still has some kinks, though, as its melodies seem random more often than not. But when it does succeed and manages to create a tune to match yours, it’s impressive. For a moment, it is as if there’s another person on the other end of the piano with you.
While there is still room for improvement, AI Duet is a fun way to pass the time. (sul/kes)
