n celebration of NASA’s recent news regarding the discovery of seven previously unknown earth-sized planets orbiting a sun-like dwarf star, Google has released their newest Doodle that depicts the Earth looking into a telescope alongside our moon, only to discover the seven planets are 235 trillion miles away. 

These newly discovered planets make up solar system Trappist-1, which contains three planets that may be holding water, judging by their distance from their dwarf star. While researchers don’t yet know how much like earth any of these planets are, they say this discovery is significant.

“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” NASA administrator Thomas Zurbuchen said in a statement.

“Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.” (sul/kes)
