Over two decades since the first book was released, the 68-year-old author is still currently working on the franchise’s sixth installment, “The Winds of Winter.”

His pace has been widely critiqued by some fans, as the HBO show has caught up with the book and has even overtaken some parts of it.

But contrary to what the public believes, the legendary writer has actually been busy and has announced the release of a short story as part of the Game of Thrones franchise.

As part of the “The Book of Swords” anthology, the novella “The Sons of the Dragon” will be published on Oct. 10, Esquire reported.

But rather than expanding on the anthology’s already rich plot, the short story is more of “a history rather than a traditional narrative.”

Much like its title suggests, the short will delve into the rich history of the esteemed Targaryen hierarchy.

“If you’re fascinated by the politics of Westeros, as many of my readers seem to be, you should enjoy it,” Martin said.

“’The Sons of the Dragon’ chronicles the reigns of the second and third Targaryen kings, Aenys I and Maegor the Cruel, along with their mothers, wives, sisters, children, friends, enemies and rivals,” he added.

As of this writing, there is still no timetable on when the highly anticipated “The Winds of Winter” will hit bookstores. HBO’s adaptation, meanwhile, returns for its seventh season on July 16.
