T

he Manado State University (MSU) Choir from North Sulawesi is set to perform at the International Youth Choir Festival 2017 in the Royal Albert Hall in London, England, on April 15 and 17.

Invited by the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, the troupe, consisting of 20 singers, will perform alongside other choir groups from different countries, including Hong Kong, Israel, the United States and South Africa.

Following the London show, the choir is also scheduled to perform at Cambridge University on April 20.

“We’re very excited to perform [in London],” the troupe’s music director and conductor André de Quadros, who is also a professor at Boston University, recently told The Jakarta Post during a fundraising concert in Jakarta.

Regarding preparations, MSU Choir chairman Eduard Waturandang said via email that, “So far our technical preparation is 100 percent. However, we’re still lacking a budget for accommodations. We're still trying to gather the funds from our donors, the government and our friends, as well as Indonesian citizens in London.”

The choir is to perform Indonesian songs during the show in London. “We will sing 'Janger' from Bali and songs from Manado. Hopefully we can promote Indonesian culture to the world through this event,” said Eduard.

After the shows in the United Kingdom, the troupe is slated to perform in the Music and Humanity Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, in June. (kes)
