fter being launched globally last month, Twitter Lite, a stripped-down version of Twitter than boasts faster connection speeds and less data consumption, has been officially launched in Indonesia.
"[This release targets] markets that have poor internet connection and small phone storage capacity," said senior director of Twitter Asia Pacific Business Development, Arvinder Gujral, during a launch event in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Twitter Lite, which is accessible from the mobile web, is said to use Progressive Web App (WPA) technology that allows up to 70 percent less data consumption and 30 percent faster connection speeds compared accessing Twitter from the mobile app version. The Twitter app for Android, for instance, could reach hundreds of megabytes (MB), while this lighter version will need less than 1MB of storage on the user's phone.

Prior to Indonesia, which is one of the countries with the largest number of Twitter users, Twitter Lite was debuted in India, reported Antara news agency.
According to Twitter data, users in Indonesia's small cities were found to be interested in getting involved in online conversations, especially related to sports and entertainment, but were unable to do so due to unfriendly package deals, poor internet connection and limited phone memory.
Twitter Lite can be accessed through mobile.twitter.com via any browser, either on mobile phone or computer, and offers a similar experience to the Twitter app. (vod/kes)
