South African director Neill Blomkamp is making a return to sci-fi with his newest flick, Volume 1.
The short film is being created by his new science fiction studio, Oats Studios, and will feature the human race going up against extraterrestrial forces. Blomkamp’s popular 2009 film, District 9, was originally a short film and was titled Alive in Joburg.
The director has yet to confirm which platform Volume 1 will be appearing on, but he has hinted that it might be released though video game platform Steam.
“If I sold experimental short films on @steam_games as tests for potential full feature films, would people watch them?” tweeted Blomkamp in April.

Volume 1 would not be Steam’s first film -- Lionsgate films can be rented through Steam -- but the Valve-owned platform is typically considered to be a digital video game store. Still, some believe this potential deal between Blomkamp and Steam could help to legitimize Steam’s place in the film streaming market. (sul/kes)
