n Wednesday, President of the United States Donald Trump announced in a series of tweets, his decision to ban transgender people from the military.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you,” the president wrote.

The tweets have sparked controversy online, with public figures taking into their social media accounts to criticize the ban. “There are 15,000 patriotic transgender Americans in the US military fighting for all of us. What happened to your promise to fight for them?” said TV reality star Caitlyn Jenner.

“I believe every American should be outraged by the disrespect shown to those people wearing our country’s uniform. Furthermore, this half-baked idea puts all of our service members in harm’s way,” the star also wrote on her website

Star Wars actor George Takei said that Trump has “just pissed of the wrong community”. “History shall record that you are not only the stupidest, most incompetent president ever, but also the cruelest and pettiest,” Takei wrote in his Twitter. Meanwhile, actress Mia Farrow cited back to Trump’s 2016 tweet, where he said he would protect the LGBT community.

Musical actress, trans woman Candis Cayne remarked that the hate towards trans people needs to stop. “As trans women and men, have never asked for anything other than to live our lives as our authentic self this hate has to stop!” she wrote on her Twitter.

The ban is regarded as a reversal to former president Barrack Obama’s regulation, which allows transgender people to openly serve in the military, The New York Times reported. Australian publication news.com.au wrote that the decision may affect up to 7,000 members of active duty service and up to 4,000 reserves. (mas/asw).
