P

aintings by Yogyakarta-born Ratu Adil are currently being displayed at the Mansfield Art Center in Texas, the United States, marking the artist's first solo exhibition abroad.

Titled "Places I Call Home," the exhibition will run until Aug. 4 as part of the Mansfield Commission for the Arts program, which supports local artists in Texas.

"Home is more than just a building. For me, home is more about the sense of comfort and the memories built together with the people we love," Ratu said during the exhibition’s opening on July 22 as quoted by a press statement.

Ratu grew up in Yogyakarta, where her father owns an art studio. After first learning from artists who visited the studio, she continued her studies at the Texas Academy of Figurative Art in Fort Worth and also learned abstract impressionism from the Upstairs Gallery in Arlington.

The 34-year-old painter continues to include Javanese influences in her art throughout the eight years she has resided in the US.

JT Martin, the Upstairs Gallery owner, praised Ratu's consistency in inserting symbols that show her cultural roots.

Sylvia Shirley Malinton, a representative from the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Texas, commended Ratu for helping to promote Indonesian culture and art to the Mansfield-Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) community.

"Ratu Adil brings us to the memories of the natural beauty, culture and life of cities in Indonesia and the city of Mansfield through her paintings," Sylvia said. (liz/kes)
