he Google Drive app for desktop, which allows users to access the company's cloud storage service, will no longer be functional as of March 2018.
The support for the desktop app, either on PC or Mac, will be discontinued by Dec. 11. According to kompas.com, users will start receiving notifications regarding the matter in October.
To replace the app, Google has prepared a new app dubbed "Backup and Sync." Also serving as a replacement for Google Photos Uploader, the new app is said to have similar functions and mode of operation to Google Drive app for desktop.

The tech company's cloud storage service will continue to exist unchanged and will therefore remain accessible, either from the web, smartphone or "Backup and Sync."
The new app targets public users. For business users, Google is offering a more upgraded version, the "Drive File Stream" app, that is able to, among other things, stream files from the cloud without having to store them locally on the users' computer. (kes)
