T

witter has said it will update its policies following a tweet published over the weekend by United States President Donald Trump that prompted North Korea to take it as a declaration of war.

Responding to questions as to why Trump's threatening tweet has not been removed, Twitter said in a post published on Tuesday that "newsworthiness" and public interest were among the considerations of whether tweets had violated rules, implying that Trump's account would not be censored.

"This has long been internal policy and we'll soon update our public-facing rules to reflect it. We need to do better on this, and will," the company said in a tweet thread posted on the issue.

According to The Verge, there has been some controversy since the 2016 US election primaries over whether Twitter should ban Trump's account or hide some of his tweets, which often insult other individuals.

The social media platform has not previously addressed this issue.

But the issue came up again on Monday after North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho accused Trump of declaring war on his country by tweeting on Sunday that North Korea "won't be around much longer."

"All the member states and the whole world should clearly remember it was the United States that first declared war on our country," Ri told reporters in New York on Monday as quoted by AFP. (liz/asw)
