wo Indonesian films, Ziarah (Tales of the Otherwords) and Mobil Bekas dan Kisah-kisah dalam Putaran (The Carousel Never Stops Turning), are scheduled to be screened at the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) 2017. The festival will be held from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3 at Roppongi Hills in Minato, Tokyo.

Both films, which are helmed by B.W. Purba Negara and Ismail Basbeth respectively, are part of the fourth installment of Crosscut Asia section. Resulting from the collaboration between Japan Foundation Asia Center institution and TIFF, this year’s Crosscut Asia highlights What’s Next from Southeast Asia as its theme.

The section itself will feature young filmmakers who are recommended by renowned filmmakers within the same region, such as Garin Nugroho and Riri Riza from Indonesia, Brilliante Ma Mendoza from the Philippines, Tran Anh Hung from Vietnam and Apichatpong Weerasethaukl from Thailand.

Tales of the Otherwords narrates the story of a 95-year-old ‘Mbah’ Sri who is in search for a grave of her husband, Prawiro, who has been missing since the war era. It is because she wants to lay to rest beside her husband’s grave. Meanwhile, The Carousel Never Stops Turning is about the current Indonesia that is told from different perspectives, some of them are economy, laws and history.

Aside from those films above, there are also other titles, among them are Big Father, Small Father and Other Stories, Kristo, My Superheroes and Yasmin-san. (asw)
