T

hose who cannot wait for the latest film release from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok, can consider visiting the ongoing Disney×Marvel Studios exhibition at South Jakarta's Pacific Place, which will run 23 days through Nov. 12.

At the promotional exhibition ahead of the film’s Indonesian premiere on Oct. 25, visitors can enjoy a new look and adventures into Thor's realm, like swinging pugil sticks and taking augmented-reality photos with Thor, Hulk and Hela. The exhibit also features life-sized statues of the 1.9-meter Thor and the 2.6-meter Hulk.

As the third Thor instalment, Ragnarok narrates the Asgardian's journey from being trapped on the other side of the universe without his faithful hammer, Mjolnir. He needs to rush home to Asgard and stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his home and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of his new, malicious enemy, Hela – The Goddess of Death.

The film is helmed by New Zealand's director Taika Waititi, a self-confessed "huge fan" of Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Since I was little, I have always dreamed and fantasized about things in outer space, such as becoming a Viking, an Asgardian,” Waititi said in a press release.

“I think [I want] to do a different approach from my predecessors. I never thought that Marvel would agree with my vision. They wanted to bring Thor to a new and fresh direction, like going to outer space and spending as little time on Earth as possible. They wanted to make Thor a fun character in an adventure. For me, Ragnarok indicates the destruction of old things and a rebirth of new things. And it really makes me excited!”

Although the film uses new Nordic backgrounds and locations, Thor: Ragnarok deals with issues that many people might have faced on their journey to discovering identity.

“Thor always holds on to the good side. He upholds moral values. He knows what he needs to do,” Waititi said. “But in this film, audiences will see another side of Thor which has never been shown before. He’s sassy, brave and adventurous. Thor has everything that makes people fall in love with him. But we also add other things and expand his character.”

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo, Thor: Ragnarok will premiere in local cinemas on Oct. 25. (kes)
