Biennale contemporary arts programs are set to be held simultaneously in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Makassar.
The 14th installment of Biennale Jogja is slated to run from Nov. 2 to Dec. 10 at the Jogja National Museum. Themed Equator: Brazil, the event will feature 27 Indonesian and Brazilian artists, including Narpati Awangga (oomleo), Yunizar, Mulyana, and Leticia Ramos.
Biennale Jogja artistic director Dodo Hartoko said during a press conference in Senayan City shopping mall, South Jakarta, on Friday that the exhibit is also having an Artist in Residency program in collaboration with the Brazilian Embassy. For two months, Brazilian artists Rodrigo Braga, Yuri Firmeza and Daniel Lie will interact with residents of Yogyakarta to create artwork.
After the opening of Biennale Jogja, Jakarta Biennale 2017 is scheduled to run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 11. Themed Jiwa (Soul), the event will be held at three different venues: Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem in Pancoran, South Jakarta; the Jakarta History Museum; and the Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics in West Jakarta, featuring a total of 51 artists from 17 countries.
In Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem, the Jakarta Biennale 2017 will showcase a total of 28 artworks.

Jakarta Biennale artistic director Melati Suryodarmo said the event was part of an effort to bring the contemporary arts closer to the general public.
“These museum visitors are amazing as they came from different cities,” she said.
Lastly, the Makassar Biennale is slated to run on Nov. 8-28 at Pelataran Menara Pinisi UNM. Presenting Maritim (Maritime) as its theme, the event is set to feature works from across the archipelago, from Sabang to Merauke.
The three programs are supported by the Indonesia Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf). The agency’s deputy head, Ricky Joseph Pesik, explained that Bekraf supported the events individually, but organizers decided to hold them simultaneously.
He said the decision was an effective way to present Indonesian contemporary arts to global audiences, as it allows international art enthusiasts to attend all the events in one trip. (kes)
