uring his latest visit to Jakarta, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski shared three main requirements for those who want to become comic artists or illustrators at the American comics giant.

"There is an old rule that says that in order to become a comic artist, you must work well, fast and be friendly," Cebulski told kompas.com on Monday.

"If you have two of those [qualities], you might get a job. If you have all three, you will have a job for a lifetime," he added.

The price you pay for living in Jakarta

It doesn't really matter where you live, Jakarta is expensive everywhere. The only real choice is what you're willing to pay with: your money, your time or your sanity.

Cebulski said, however, that the company deliberately disregarded the old rule.

"First, you have to have the talent; not only in drawing, but also in creating stories, moving the characters from one panel to another and one page to another," he said.

Many people were able to create beautiful illustrations, he said, but not everybody could tell a story through their drawings.

"You don't have to be fast, since each artist works at a different pace. Hence, it's not about working fast, but working hard," Cebulski explained.

He added that a comic artist needed to work within deadlines.

"If you have a deadline, you have to respect your editor, respect Marvel's needs, and respect your [own] deadline."

Finally, Cebulski said Marvel comic artists must have an open personality and be able to work as a team.

At least six people could be on a team working on a single comic book, consisting of the writer, penciller, inker, colorist, letterer and editor.

"[The team works] almost like a family. You have to work with them every single day. And you have to have a personality that's open to other ideas and be able to work with other people," said Cebulski.

Success isn’t at the top of the corporate ladder anymore

Success isn’t at the top of the corporate ladder anymore

My generation watched our parents give everything to a company. We decided to give it to ourselves instead. But it's more complicated than that.

"But the most important thing is, you have to know that although it is a job, we need to keep having fun, since comic books are about having fun," he said, laughing. (kes)
