n Indonesian student in Germany, Robian “Robinto” Pangarepo, has auditioned for the country's version of reality talent show Pop Idol, Deustchland sucht den Superstar 2018 (DSDS 2018).
In a video uploaded on DSDS' official website, Robinto, who was donning udeng (Balinese male headband), was seen being greeted by the competition's four judges, musician/songwriter Dieter Bohlen, singers Ella Endlich and Carolin Niemczyk and DJ/producer Mousse T.
The West Kalimantan-born student then performed “Bring Him Home,” a song from the 2012 film Les Misérables. Although not all of the judges gave him a firm “yes,” Robinto received praise from Niemczyk as well as Bohlen and successfully went through to the next round.
“Singing is my life,” Rointo said outside the audition room with tears on his face. “I think DSDS can change my life.”

On his vlog, Robinto said he previously had no plan to join a singing competition, as he wanted to focus on his studies. But he admitted that he was inspired to participate anyway after watching videos of Indonesians who had joined international singing competitions, such as Eirene Dili Artris, who entered Switzerland’s Got Talent 2015 and mother/daughter duo Ana and Fia, who performed on Britain's Got Talent 2016.
“After seeing the ad [of the competition on the internet], I wanted to try to perhaps experience the euphoria,” Robinto said.
Prior to auditioning in front of the four judges, Robinto had to go through five preauditions.
“Hopefully my DSDS audition video will open the young people’s eyes that nothing is impossible,” Robinto said. “The most important thing is, as long as we have a dream, we [should] strive to fulfill it. Believe in ourselves; don’t wait for other people to do it.” (kes)
