he film rights of Benyamin Biang Kerok (Benyamin the Troublemaker), directed by Hanung Bramantyo, has reportedly been sued by the writer of the original script, Syamsul Fuad.

According to kompas.com on Thursday, the 81-year-old Syamsul filed the lawsuit with the Central Jakarta District Court on March 5 against Falcon Pictures and Max Pictures, the production houses of the 2018 film with the same title, as well as Falcon Pictures cofounder and producer HB Naveen, for copyright infringement of the stories of Benyamin Biang Kerok and Biang Kerok Beruntung (The Lucky Troublemaker).

Tempo.co reported on Thursday that Hanung had not heard of the lawsuit, and as far as he knew, Falcon Pictures had purchased the rights of all Benyamin films.

"I think Falcon has processed [the purchase of film rights] since Pak Syamsul had attended the [film's] gala premiere. We had even invited him to come up on stage [at the time], but unfortunately he had already left," said Hanung.

Syamsul, who claimed to own the story and film rights of Benyamin Biang Kerok and Biang Kerok Beruntung, is reportedly suing the aforementioned parties for Rp 1 billion (US$70,000) and Rp 10 billion for material and non-material losses, respectively, royalties for the ticket sales at Rp 1,000 per ticket, as well as an apology and clarification on two national mass media outlets.

In a press release as quoted by tempo.co, HB Naveen stated that the 2018 Benyamin Biang Kerok was not a rebooted film. The story was written by Bagus Bramanti, and his company had also purchased the rights of the Benyamin Biang Kerok film in 2010.

The defendants did not attend first trial of the case on Thursday, thus it was postponed to April 5. (kes)
