ining company PT Smelting is collaborating with Taman Safari Indonesia in a conservation project to help conserve the Javan hawk-eagle, a highly endangered and protected species that can only be found in Indonesia.

The Javan hawk-eagle, which served as inspiration for Indonesia's national symbol, the Garuda, was made the mascot of endangered Indonesian species in 1992 due to its majestic crest and conservation status.

The endangered brown bird is facing many threats. Aside from illegal poaching and deforestation, the species is also vulnerable to being captured for pet trade.

To conserve the species, a contract was signed on Saturday at Taman Safari Indonesia Lodge by Taman Safari Indonesia director Jansen Manansang and Smelting president director Hiroshi Kondo.

Students are expected to join the campaign at middle and high schools, using the tagline "Love the Javan hawk-eagle".

The program targets an increase in the population of the eagle through breeding. As part of the project, a conservation facility and food station will be built and a study on behavior and reproduction and survey involving several local conservation projects in Java will be carried out.

According to Janseng, the plan is for the eagles to breed on site for three years at Taman Safari Indonesia. In the fourth and fifth years, the eagles will be released into the wild.

He said he hoped for the project to be supported by Indonesian citizens, as to reduce the number of wild animals captured for illegal trade. (ely/wng)
