Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Mike Schur said in a tweet that the show was being picked up by NBC "because the fans of the show went berzerk".

The show hailed support from some of Hollywood’s biggest names after its cancellation. Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro was among the first to tweet support for the show, according to BBC.

Broadway heavyweight Lin Manuel Miranda jumped on the #RenewB99 bandwagon with passion.

Nineties boyband The Backstreet Boys also tweeted their support, attaching a picture of a famous scene from the show in which Andy Samberg’s character, Jake Peralta, gets a criminal suspect lineup to sing the band’s hit song “I Want It That Way”

In addition to protesting the cancellation, fans of the show suggested that streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu pick up the show for its sixth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt stated in a release that he was thrilled to secure the show on his network. "Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home," he said.

"Mike Schur, Dan Goor and Andy Samberg grew up on NBC and we’re all thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest and best-cast comedies in a long time will take its place in our comedy lineup. I speak for everyone at NBC, here’s to the Nine-Nine!” (asw)
