Science fiction television series “Star Trek: Discovery” elected a new showrunner for its second season.

The popular TV series’ second season was supposed to be handled by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who took over for season one’s Bryan Fuller. “Discovery’s” second season will now be helmed by “Star Trek” franchise veteran and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Kurtzman worked on the most recent “Star Trek” reboot feature films “Star Trek” and “Star Trek into Darkness.”

“We’ve made some producer changes at Star Trek: Discovery. The series continues under the creative vision and leadership of executive producer and co-creator Alex Kurtzman. Discovery remains on course for season two in 2019 with new and continuing stories that build on its successful premiere season,” said CBS in a statement, according to the report.

Berg and Harberts had been taken off the project due to leadership and operational issues. Insiders stressed that the former showrunners became increasingly abusive of the “Discovery” writing staff. This made writers uncomfortable working with them and threatened to file a complaint with human resources or just quit.

Despite the challenges, the first five episodes of season two are near completion. Berg and Harberts will also be credited for the episodes they oversaw.

CBS and producer CBS Television Studios are currently said to be pleased with the cuts and scripts they have seen from season two. Fans of the show may also expect Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike to make an appearance in season two when it airs in 2019.
