Loads of things happened in the United States back in 1984, which was an awesome year.

There was the Olympic Games in Los Angeles; Madonna’s iconic "Like A Virgin" performance at MTV’s first Music Video Awards; Michael Jackson suffering second- and third-degree burns while shooting a Pepsi commercial; the release of classic films like GhostbustersThe Karate KidThe Terminator and Purple Rain; and Republican candidate Ronald Reagan winning the United States presidential election by a huge landslide.

The fact that the second Wonder Woman movie, Wonder Woman 1984, is set in that year already makes for an exciting subplot. Another buzz-worthy element of the movie – which sees director Patty Jenkins re-teaming with star Gal Gadot – is the return of Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor. Wait, wasn’t he killed in a plane explosion in the first Wonder Woman film, which was set in 1917? Did he somehow time-travel just before that happened?

The film, currently in production, also revealed Wonder Woman’s new foe: The Cheetah aka Dr Barbara Minerva, played by Kristen Wiig.

Barbara’s backstory (in the comics) is she’s an archaeologist who gains the powers of a cheetah-god, during an expedition-gone-wrong in Africa. Cheetah has some weaknesses that she thinks can be fixed if she gains Wonder Woman’s Golden Lasso.

Wonder Woman 1984 is tentatively scheduled to open in cinemas on Oct 31, 2019.
