ears before Lifelike Pictures decided to release a movie on Wiro Sableng, the character that is based on the late Bastian Tito’s books has been popularly turned into films as well as sinetron (soap opera).

With so many versions of Wiro Sableng already made available, the production house decided to use a different storyline for its film.

Vino G. Bastian, the actor who plays Wiro Sableng in the upcoming film slated for release on Aug. 30, said Lifelike Pictures and team made the film to be like a reboot. "So it has a new storyline without leaving the essence of the books," he added.

The Indonesian Movie Actors Awards 2018 winner said the film would actually be part of a trilogy. “The first part will focus on [Bastian's] first 10 books, although it will also feature some characters who actually show up in the 11th and 12th books,” he said during a meet and greet session on Saturday at the 2018 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show at Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD in Tangerang, Banten.

Vino, who is Bastian's son, highlighted that books and films are two different works. “I once heard my father say that when Wiro Sableng was made into a sinetron and film; just let the imagination of the filmmakers develop, because the books don’t have illustrations, hence the readers will imagine things differently. And my father was fine with that. Maybe there are other fans who want it to follow the books, but it can’t be like that because literature works always develop […] My family is fine [with the film] as long as the characters don’t change.”

Back in June, the film's producer Sheila “Lala” Timothy stated the film would stay loyal to the books, although at that time she did not specify which part of the books that would be used.

The upcoming Wiro Sableng film targets the young generation who are not yet familiar with the Indonesian hero character, hence the film is said to use jokes and language that are relatable to them.

The film's trailer, released in late July, narrates the beginning of Wiro Sableng until he becomes a warrior. The actor who played the sinetron-version of Wiro Sableng, Ken Ken, could be seen in one of the scenes. (kes)
