F

ollowing her appearance in The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation, the demonic entity Valak finally gets her spotlight in The Nun.

Serving as a prequel to all the films in The Conjuring universe, The Nun tells the origin of the evil nun back in 1952 and explores the reason why she terrorizes the Warrens later on.

A strange incident happens at the secluded Abbey of St. Carta in Romania, where a nun is found hanging in front of the gate. The Vatican sends Father Burke (Demiàn Bichir) and Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to investigate the place and decide whether it is still holy. Both have their own dark pasts; Burke is still haunted by his failed exorcism; meanwhile, Irene is accused by her father of suffering from a mental disorder as she often has visions. To reach the abbey at the top of the mountain, the two are accompanied by Maurice “Frenchie” Theriault (Jonas Bloquet), a French-Canadian farmer who discovers the nun’s corpse.

During their stay in the abbey, Burke and Irene experience a series of odd events, especially sightings of a nun that Irene describes as “anything but holy”. They later find out about a demon in the abbey and they have to seal it before it possesses a human and goes to the outside world.

Directed by Corin Hardy, The Nun gives fresh perspective to The Conjuring franchise as it is located in a castle. Jump scares are still used to terrify the audience, but there are scenes that are thrilling on their own and do not need background music to make the audience jump out of their seats.

Since its debut in The Conjuring 2, many Indonesian netizens have transformed Valak into funny meme material. But the malevolent nun is still scary as it has a darker aura in this spin-off and the film’s ad was also removed by YouTube back in August due to complaints. But for those who are curious to experience the jump scares, the film launched a 3600 video about escaping from the abbey.

It is not mandatory to watch either The Conjuring 2 or Annabelle: Creation before The Nun, but it will help you to connect the dots as they are related to each other. (kes)
