The 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated Palu, Donggala and Mamuju in Central Sulawesi on Friday evening has claimed 1,234 lives, as of Tuesday, and injured many others. The earthquake destroyed infrastructure and homes, leaving survivors without shelter.

According to a statement issued by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) via its social media accounts, basic necessities that are still urgently needed to help the victims are fuel (diesel fuel and gasoline), drinking water, medical personnel, medicines and field hospitals, tents, tarps, blankets, stretchers, water tanks, food, lamps, generator sets, emergency kitchens, body bags, shrouds and baby food.

Humanitarian organizations have extended a helping hand, accepting donations in the form of funds, goods and volunteer work. Here is the list of organizations through which you can offer assistance to the Palu and Donggala earthquake victims:

Indonesian Red Cross (PMI)

A member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the PMI was established in September 1945. The PMI has a mandate to provide fast, accurate and coordinated aid when disasters occur. The organization employs volunteers across Indonesia to carry out its duties.

Providing services on behalf of the government, the PMI follows the six-hour principle, which means they have to arrive at the location within six hours after a disaster strikes, provide help using appropriate equipment from regional warehouses, operate rescue and medical vehicles, and organize water and sanitation support at their posts.

The PMI is also responsible for evacuating victims, setting up shelter, providing first aid, organizing public kitchens and distributing aid and donations.
