A consumer report released Saturday showed Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s toilets received the most complaints of eight airport facilities surveyed.
The survey, conducted by the Indonesian Consumers Organization (YLKI), showed 46 percent of the total 955 complaints on airport facilities were targeted at toilets.
The other eight were prayer rooms, sign boards, X-rays, trolleys, waiting rooms, parking lots, airport information and eating places. Complaints about prayer rooms came in second at 14 percent.
YLKI member Indah Sukmaningtyas said the complaints were received by text message (SMS), phone, fax, mail and the Internet.
YLKI announced its survey Saturday in a discussion that featured airport customers and employees among the speakers.
Airport customer Atsih said the toilets were poorly maintained.
“Airport toilets reflect the country. But toilets at Soekarno-Hatta are poorly maintained and dirty. Sometimes there’s no water, tissues or rubbish bins,” said Atsih, who works at a travel agency.
The head of Soekarno-Hatta airport, Haryanto, said operator Angkasa Pura II confirmed the findings, saying it had also received complaints about toilet facilities.
“Since we began operating the toilets in 1985, we have never renovated them due to the lack of budget. But this year, we will renovate about 100 toilets and improve their maintenance and cleaning. We will also build some toilets in the parking area. We promise,” Haryanto said.
He added the operator would also try to raise awareness among airport users.
“Many toilet users still do not know how to use the toilets correctly. We need to educate them.” (trw)

Indonesia as a country is too cute. We are the only country that do things the "tambal sulam" way. It is just too cute. International community can't stand it but to feel very "gemes".

Toilets are not clean when the people in charge (in this case the airport management) do not believe that clean toilets are important. Definitely a very bad first impression when you get to Indonesia.
Other than that, many people have no idea how to clean, they just throw some water around and leave it at that. They do not use any bleach or similar products, no spongues or brushes to scrub. You often see ancient dirt on the walls or in the corners. It is simply disgusting.

I agree that many toilet users still don't know how to use sitting toilets correctly. But if this is the only reason, case, toilets in malls should then also be considerably unclean. However, as you can see, many malls apparently are able to keep their toilets clean! So that means it is more important to increase the skills of the maintenance staff.

Either educate the locals to use tissue instead of 'cebok', or introduce our 'cebok' culture to foreign visitors

Cleanliness is depend on the maintenance and daily maintenance..
Renovate is not the solution, the solutions
So Maintenance is the Solution

-What a lame argument! Budget is always available; but, the allocation is the one that makes it seem unavailable.
“Many toilet users still do not know how to use the toilets correctly. We need to educate them.”
-This is partially true. However, we do need facilities to keep the toilets clean, not only awareness.

Out of the five major ASEAN countries' airports of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines & Singapore, Sukarno Hatta ranks a distant last. There is nothing nice about the place and should be seen as an embarrassment, as this is the front door to the country.
