By The Way: FPI too busy talking to God

Sun, 06/08/2008 12:01 PM  |  Headlines

Christians are so close to God that they call Him "father" in prayer, while Muslims are so far away from Allah that they need loudspeakers to talk to Him.

This is an old joke, but I couldn't tell you earlier because I was afraid. If Rizieq Shihab had found out, he might have beaten me black and blue or, worse, burned down my house.

Thank God, he is now in police custody.

If you happen to have watched the news (not the saucy gossip shows or soap operas) or read the paper recently, you would know of Rizieq, the leader of the Islam Defenders Front (FPI).

A radical group, FPI, attacked members of the National Alliance for Freedom of Faith and Religion (AKKBB), who were rallying last Sunday at the National Monument (Monas) park to mark the 63rd anniversary of Pancasila state ideology.

The FPI made their attack because the alliance supports Jamaah Ahmadiyah, a minority Islamic sect dubbed "heretical" by a government panel which also recommended it be banned.

The hardliners had earlier attacked Ahmadiyah sect members, their houses and mosques, and called Ahmadiyah a deviant sect.

The sect leader was once accused of blasphemy, but other than that I have never heard of the sect's members committing theft, robbery, murder or any other crimes listed in the Criminal Code.

If they have their own interpretations of some verses in the Koran, it is only God who could decide whether it is right or wrong.

In 2006, FPI members vandalized the Play Boy magazine offices in South Jakarta, when the magazine first published its Indonesian version. They said the publication could damage people's morality, but perhaps the real reason was that they were disappointed to find the Indonesian version didn't have the same 'hot' pictures as its American parent.

They had also repeatedly attacked cafes, bars and nightspots during the Ramadhan fasting month because they believed the establishments violated existing regulations and would tarnish the Holy month.

And they committed all these violent acts in the name of God. Frequently FPI members shouted "Allahuakbar" (God is Great) while conducting their anarchic deeds. They also prayed a lot.

Praying five times a day is one of the five pillars of Islam followed by, not only FPI members, but all Muslims around the world.

The Muslim call to prayer, and prayer itself, can be heard in every corner of the city. It would seem it is a case of the louder, the better, so that everyone in the neighborhood can hear it. It doesn't matter if it is still dawn or if it's during school hours and the mosque is right next to a school. If one mosque is next to another, they may even compete to be loudest.

On Friday, mosques are crowded with congregations who enthusiastically come to pray and listen to preachers.

Non-Muslims also perform their religious rituals devoutly. Churches are always full on Sundays, when Christians and the Catholics pray and praise the Lord.

Indonesia is indeed one of the most religious nations in the world, a fact confirmed by last year's religion monitoring study conducted in 21 countries by the German-based Bertelsmann Foundation.

Ironically, Indonesia is also notorious for being among the world's most corrupt countries.

Being religious, corruptors must pray first before stealing state money, or perhaps they set aside a little of the corrupted money to build mosques or churches.

Another indicator of the strength of religion in Indonesia was in the huge number of people who enjoyed the recent movie Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love), which is heavily loaded with religious messages.

President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono who watched the blockbuster along with several cabinet ministers reportedly shed tears because he was so touched by the story. But many joked, saying he had cried because he shared the pain of not being allowed to have more than one wife like the leading role.

Anyway, following the Monas attack, many people (mostly Muslims) demanded the ban of the FPI and some even called its members preman berjubah (thugs in Muslim robes) as they wore long white robes and headscarves during the violence.

Not only FPI members, but it seems many other Muslims, Christians and other deeply religious people are often too busy talking to God in one-way conversations, praising and worshiping God, reading the Koran, the Bible and other holy books, while turning their backs on fellow human beings.

Of course, talking to God is important, but if they think praying five times a day or going to Church every Sunday, or even everyday, is enough to allow them climb the stairway to heaven, maybe they should think again.

By the way, if you find the opening of this piece offensive, please accept my apology. I don't mean to upset anyone, let alone God, who must be sad enough seeing the violence and frequent religious conflicts within this so-called religious nation.

Hey, that's a really cool post voicing your own opinion

and it's very witty, I like it very much

Salute to the one who wrote this. It is interesting to see Jakarta Post pioneering the free speech that have been opressed all this time especially in this sensitive issue. It is necessary to hear everyone opinion on this so we can get the objectives and move forward. We been meddling and stuck with this issues for far too long.
And yes, violence is a big no no for whatever reasons that is. We're educated nation, or that what I hope to believe, and i believe conflict should be solved in discussion table and not with machete or molotov cocktails.

Bravo!

Long live free speech!
Wish i can write such an honest article, without fear that the FPI thug will hunt me for "jihad"

Marhaen

Well, what the writer wrote is one of the fact the life in Indonesia at the moment ! I'm sick of fanatism of moslem in Indonesia, sometime they are too " over " and do not understand full meaning of "toleransi" .. I'm not sure what FPI did is reflective of Moslem religion .. they are too rude and behave like an animal !

Actually if you want to judge something you have to really master about that problem that you judge. Don't judge someting from one or two side but you have to realize that we live in diversity and should honour each other.I'm not blame to FPI because basically its depend on our self and their rights. Not our job to judge them. Our job is educate our self. I'm blaming this article writer, because its a pity that he or she can write an article but he or she havent its knowledge.

Nice article and afterthought, i hope much more Indonesian dare to tell the real story about the Indonesian itself.

There is one thing that I just don't understand. Why the hell the most acknowledged English newspaper like The Jakarta Post issues this article. I advise that The Jakarta Post be more selective in issuing their articles since articles like this can offend specific groups of people.

To the writer, I could only say "educate yourself more!". You talk about religions as if you were the master in them. Why don't you try to read the article that you wrote by yourself? Can you find useful or intriguing information in it? Or, does it encourage people to be one - instead of breaking them apart?

I am a Moslem myself, and I am not into FPI at all. What they've done might be wrong in our perception. But why not try to stand on their shoes sometimes??
Wouldn't we be irritated by the widespread diseases around our lives? Diseases that corrupt our children?

Look around us. Sex has been treated as a lifestyle. Being kept private is another issue. The problem is it is done openly in front of minor ages. And there is no action taken by the authority - or less action at all!

Again for the writer, please use some references (reliable ones) before you write article like this. Do not create more anxiety in this already-chaotic nation. We need something or someone that we can hold on to. We do not need any "cheap propaganda (??)" to live our lives.

Being full of social critics and awareness doesn't mean tearing down other vicinities (that have been constructed with great efforts) around us! Remind that!

well..i believe that u didn't have any intention on abusing one religion..but u and other people have to know (i think...) FPI and other extremists do not have integrated knowledge about their own religion.
Why?
first, by judging people that they are deviant, i assume that FPI etc were acting like God. And i believe that there are no God's dualism lesson in any religion.

Second,in humanism, violence upon others is a crime, well i'd like to call it ' a sin'. and i believe that religion is higher than any humanism values. so, you can conclude what violence means in religion.

third, since i'm a moslem..i know that Mohammad S.A.W taught us about tolerance and tolerating differences. So,i have a question in mind, which Mohammad does FPI put a faith in?

fourth,if they (FPI and other extremists)did all their actions on behalf of morality, then i can say that they are hypocrite. Why?. How bout corruption? how bout a child murder executed by their own parents? where are they?

it's not a scientific writing nor religious speech. it's just a voice from a citizen who adores peace.

Mr/Mrs. Sima Gunawan,

I think you should learn more about Islam prior writing article. So you get the balance opinion; not based on yours only. I guarantee with learning the truly Islam your writing is getting better.
But, it looks like you have Islam-phobia. Unfortunately, you live peacefully in the greatest Moslem community in the world. Do you think that you can experience in this harmony living is because you live surrounded by moslem? Just learn more about it....

well.. to Mr/Mrs Sima Gunawan...

Basically, you are good at fact aspect. But unfortunately, you are over simplify and generalize the matter. Yes, the FPI maybe one of the almost anarchist wanna be organization in Islam, but the fact is.. most major religion have it. If you are allowing yourself to make those kind of assumption which generalization-based, Then it will be justifiable enough to blame Christians as absolute racist religion through their ku-klux clan, or blame jews for becoming soo greedy ny taking over palestine.

Well, the point is... your over simplify and generalization may lead to some unnecessary protest or back-over. It also makes your further explanation insignificant or even irrelevant enough to be considered.
