Indonesia wins gold in math Olympiad

National Children's Day on Wednesday was commemorated in triumph, with high school students from Indonesia taking top honors in three international Olympiads overseas.

At the International Mathematics Olympiad in Madrid, Spain, Indonesian students won one gold, five silver and three bronze medals, as well as two honorable mentions, Antara news agency reported. The competition ran from July 10-22.

The students were Aldrian Obaja of SMAK 1 BPK Penabur in Bandung, Andreas Dwi Maryanto G of SMAK Kolese Santo Yusup Malang in East Java, Satria Stanza Pramayoga of SMAN 1 Trenggalek in East Java, Joseph Andreas of SMAK 1 BPK Penabur in Jakarta, Fahmi Fuady of SMA Pribadi in Bandung and Sa'aadah Sajjana Carita of SMA Semesta in Semarang.

Their achievements exceeded team manager Yudi Satriya's earlier target of one silver and five bronze medals.

Indonesian students also brought home two silver medals from the International Biology Olympiad, held in Mumbai, India, between July 13 and 20.

Anugerah Erlaut of SMA Kharisma Bangsa in Tangerang and I Made Dwi Ariawan of SMAN 1 Tabanan in Bali took the silver medals. Teammates Yanuar Dwi of SMA Semesta in Semarang and Satria Cahya of SMA 9 Yogyakarta grabbed one bronze medal each.

"The overall results were surprising and breathtaking. It's the first time Indonesia has competed in the Biology Olympiad," said Sungkowo Mujiamanu, the education ministry's high school education director.

He added Indonesian students were also successful at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Hungary, taking a gold, a silver and a bronze.

Indonesia is now aiming for three gold medals at the ongoing International Physics Olympiad in Hanoi, Vietnam, which runs from July 20 to 29. The team comprises Adam Badra Cahaya of SMAN 1 Jember in East Java, Rudi Handoko Tanin of SMA Sutomo 1 Medan in North Sumatra, Kevin Winata of SMAK 1 Penabur in Jakarta, Tyas Kokasih of SMA Taruna Nusantara Magelang in Central Java and Thomas A. Nugraha of SMAN 78 Jakarta.
