ILACAP, C. Java: The Forestry Ministry has provided three million nyamplung, or callophyllum inophyllum, seeds to be planted at 3,000 hectares of idle land along the country's coastal area, Forestry Minister Malam Sambat Kaban said Wednesday.
"Nyamplung is a very versatile plant. We can use both its wood and fruits. The fruits can be processed into biofuel as a substitute for diesel," he said.
"Nyamplung is very easy to find and plant across the country, that's why we have to maximize its function."
Cilacap Regent Probo Yulastoro said that the regency had planted 148,222 nyamplung seeds at 350 hectares in coastal areas in 2007.
"The Nyamplung tree is also good to build boats," Probo said.
A team of local farmers had tested and used nyamplung oil as fuel. One kilogram of dried nyamplung fruit can produce some 0.4 liters of oil. -- JP
