JAKARTA: The House of Representatives has invited five Myanmar members of parliament in exile to hear the President's state of the nation address at a plenary session here on Friday.
On Thursday, the House said in its press release the invitation mirrored its moral support for popular efforts to establish democracy in ASEAN member states.
"During their visit, the Myanmar MPs are expected to provide input on how the struggle for democracy and human rights in Myanmar is progressing. The House will need this in its bid to contribute to settlement of the problems facing the country," the release said.
The Myanmar delegation will comprise chairman of the MP Union Teddy Buri, MPU secretary Thein Oo, joint secretary Win Hlaing and members Dr. Tint Swe and Dr. Sann Aung.
They were elected in the 1990 elections, which the Myanmar military junta annulled.
Citing its concerns over human rights in Myanmar, the House recommended a delay to the arrival of Myanmar's new ambassador to Indonesia and the posting of the Indonesian ambassador to the neighboring country.
On Tuesday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially received the credentials of Myanmar Ambassador U Nyan Lynn. --JP
