KUALA LUMPUR: Dangdut singer Inul Daratista gave Indonesians celebrating Independence Day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a treat on Sunday, after her two Malaysian concert dates were canceled for security reasons.
"I'm so glad I could delight you all," Inul told the audience of about 1,000 packed in the Indonesian embassy grounds. They were mostly Indonesian migrant workers, students and embassy officials.
Inul had been banned from holding concerts in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. She said the policy was disappointing as many fans had bought tickets.
In Sunday's concert, Inul sang Indonesian popular hits "Bang SMS Siapa" (Texting who) and "Ketahuan" (Found out) by Matta. Comedian Mpok Ati also took the stage to entertain the audience.
Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia Da'i Bachtiar said Inul's performance demonstrated the singer, known for her controversial gyrations, had not been banned from performing in Malaysia, whose authorities once banned Beyonce for wearing sexy clothes.
"Inul was banned for security reasons," Bachtiar said, as quoted by Antara. --JP
