CSR -- Speak up on partnerships

Chevron's community engagement initiatives strive to contribute to economic growth and the well being of the communities where we operate. Partnerships are at the heart of our community engagement initiatives. We believe they are essential to creating sustainable programs that build local capabilities. We collaborate with our strategic partners to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate our community engagement projects. Our partners include local and national governments, communities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), development and donor agencies, and multilateral institutions.

Through our partnership, we leverage our own and our partners' expertise, skills, technical knowledge and financial resources. For instance, Chevron took an active role in the recovery and reconstruction of Indonesia's region of North Sumatra with a US$14.7 million project termed the Chevron Aceh Recovery Initiative. The projects have directly impacted over 100,000 people in Aceh and indirectly impacted countless more.

The initiative has developed partnerships with nearly 20 non-profit organizations, government, etc. (USAID, Banda Aceh administration, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), Swisscontact etc.). Also, we are in partnership with the Wildlife Trust, an international organization of scientists dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity and its local partners, the Center for Conservation and Insect Studies to promote biodiversity in the forest Corridor of the Gunung Halimun Salak National Park. We also have established a cooperation with ITB through Chevron University Partnership Program to advance the quality of education in the energy resources sector in Indonesia. We believe that lasting partnerships are built on ingenuity, collaboration and trust.

Harry Deje Manager - Communication Service, Corporate CommunicationsY PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk

Partnership is very crucial in CSR for corporations such as XL. Our partners are mostly those who implement CSR activities. Partners benefit XL in several ways, such as by simplifying the implementation of CSR programs -- establishing trust in people on the program, good image co-branding and efficient work through sharing resources, plus less field work.

We have various CSR partners: individuals, institutions (NGOs, communities, etc.) and even governmental bodies. Partnerships started automatically on the very first day the corporation was set up, back in 1996. We had to communicate with communities around our base transceiver stations to build our network facilities, and that's a partnership.

Our strategy is to partner with the right people/institutions. We have several criteria for this: proven experience in specific fields, good administration (it's our basis on monitoring the project), reliable resources and good image.

To date, more than 30 institutions (excluding personal partners!) partner in many XL CSR programs, such as World Food Program, Nurani Dunia, WWF, Unicef, PKPU, Rumah Dunia, KKS Melati, Rumah Singgah Griya Karya, etc.

Aida Greenbury Director of Sustainability & Stakeholder Engagement APP Indonesia

Our business couldn't survive without effective partnerships. As a pulp and paper company committed to ensuring a holistic approach to sustainability, we require a multi-stakeholder approach that provides us expert input in a wide array of fields, including biodiversity protection, greenhouse gas reduction, economic development, social empowerment and more.

Partnership is in our company's DNA -- we have been involved in a number since our company's founding.

Our partners help us to implement an effective approach to sustainability. For example, in Indonesia, APP has partnered with the world leading, independent, UK-based sustainability consultancy Environmental Resources Management (ERM) to carry out the world's first Carbon-Socio Footprint Assessments for a pulp and paper company. This is part of our effort to make our carbon footprint as small as possible and to ensure our business has a positive impact on society. The report reaffirmed that APP is among the best in the industry with regard to its carbon emissions and will help us to chart our progress toward the long-term goal of producing carbon-neutral paper.

Amru Mahalli CSR Director of Riaupulp

Working in partnership is Riaupulp's commitment to developing self-sufficient communities. Riaupulp strives to forge partnerships with small and medium enterprises in work directly applicable to the company's needs. In other words, programs that support the business. These include, for example, pallet production, plantation development and transportation. These business start-ups have the same access to advice and funding through cooperative schemes with local banks facilitated by the company. This program also focuses on transferring skills to local people in order to enable them to be self sufficient and develop at their own pace.

Since 2000, our SMEs program has helped the local community of entrepreneurs get started. We cooperate with several Indonesian banks to provide loans to local businesses participating in our SMEs program.

Riaupulp's commitment to sustainability is reflected in various CSR programs. These programs are always in line with the triple bottom line, often called the 3P concept (profit, people, planet) by managing forest resources as sustainable plantations that harmonize commercial, social and environmental development needs.

By 2008, this particular program had created 19 kinds of jobs among 120 partnerships, for 2,890 workers and achieved Rp 48.9 billion.
