A Japanese man identified as Ono Masaki has been found dead after he had gone diving with his girlfriend in waters off Nusa Penida resort.
The man's body was brought to the morgue at Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar on Friday by his girlfriend, who refused to be identified.
No detailed information was available on the cause of death as of Friday evening.
At the time, the hospital's officers were waiting for Masaki's family to identify the body before they could perform a post-mortem examination.
Masaki and his girlfriend were staying at the Jaya Karta Hotel in Kuta when they went diving in Nusa Penida waters.
Denpasar Police chief Sr. Comr. Alit Widana said Thursday his subordinates had arrested a Brazilian for carelessly driving a stolen laundry van and hitting five people in Legian, Kuta, resulting in one death and four people injured, who were taken to hospitalized.
"He got very drunk before he did all the careless driving," Widana said, explaining that the Brazilian, identified as Guilherme Guedo, had not fully sobered when he found himself in a Denpasar Police jail Thursday morning.
"Up to this time we still can't question him as he can't provide clear answers," he said, adding that the Brazilian, who was staying in one of the hotels in Legian, was in Bali on business.
Widana said that according to several witnesses questioned by the police, Guedo had initially apprehended by force a motor bike driven by Made Riawan and Made Ardita on Sahadewa Street, Legian, before later stealing a laundry van parked a few blocks away.
Geudo then drove the van the wrong way on the one way Jl. Legian. He hit a motorbike, on which were riding Wiliati and Ketut Enteg.
Wiliati died at the scene of the crime, while Enteg was taken to Sanglah General Hospital with broken legs.
"I had just left from Legian traditional market when suddenly we were hit by a laundry van," Enteg told The Jakarta Post.
Guedo continued his rampage, moments later hitting a woman driving another motorbike. The victim, Ni Made Sunadi, suffered a number of broken bones and was taken to the same hospital.
Guedo continued to drive against traffic and hit another couple riding a motorbike. Kadek Sutama and Komang Sulastri suffered broken ribs and were taken to hospital.
"He (Guedo) only stopped after his van hit an electric pole on Legian street," Widana said.
He said he had ordered his subordinates to contact Guedo's family as well as Brazil's consulate general for further assistance.
"We will ensure that his family is responsible for all the victims' medical expenses," he added.
He said Guedo had been charged with stealing a vehicle and reckless driving causing a death and injuries and that he could face a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
