New members of local KPUD for 2008-2013 appointed

The 40 members are from Denpasar and seven other regencies: Jembrana, Karangasem, Tabanan, Buleleng, Badung, Gianyar and Bangli. KPUD members for Klungkung regency will be appointed on Oct. 24, after the regency election there is completed.
Of the 40 members, 16 previously held KPUD positions and 9 are women. Lanang Perbawa said he hoped the new members would work harder than ever ahead of the 2009 general elections.
"The new members already face a great deal of work, given that preparations for the selection of candidates running for legislative council positions are already underway,' he said, reminding them to work in line with official regulations for the management of general elections.
Political observer Tjokorda Gede Atmadja said the KPUD members played an important role in helping the next general elections succeed. "It will be a big job to disseminate information on how to vote to the public.
"Under the new system voters will no longer punch the ballots, but instead tick them. It requires a large amount of funds just to implement this new system," he said.
He expressed fear that without efficient work, there could be great chaos at the general elections.
KPUD members, Atmadja said, should take on the role of reducing the number of abstainers through proper education of the voting public.
"Despite the rising skepticism about our political elite, awareness of the voting system still needs to be created."
