Students report rape after a year

JAKARTA: A university student has reported a lecturer to the police for allegedly raping her last year, police confirmed Friday.

Achmad Rifai, the head of women and children rights division, said they received the report on Oct. 10, but he declined to give more details.

The University of Indonesia suspended the lecturer, who also runs his own law firm, on Oct. 22. The case has caused uproar at the university, with rumors spreading that other female students were also sexually harassed.

Achmad confirmed that there were more victims but declined to give the number.

"We are approaching them psychologically (to convince them to come out). But although the event may have passed, it is not easy for them. Some who are married are scared their husbands may get angry," he said.

"One report, however, is enough to pursue the case."

The lawyer representing the victim, Shinta Dewi, said the victim suffered depression and was still under the watchful eye of her psychologist.

"She has been very depressed since the incident took place. It took a while for her to seek help at the university, which later referred her to the psychologist," Shinta told The Jakarta Post.

Shinta said the alleged rapist had approached her client to settle the case out of court and offered compensation. But the victim declined the offer.

"Money is not the problem," Shinta said. -- JP
