Bird flu kills teen in Central Java

SEMARANG, C. Java: Extraordinary occurrence status has been declared for Semarang after a teenage resident died from bird flu.

DS, 15, died Friday after being treated for a week at a private hospital and another four days at the Kariadi General Hospital.

Agus Suryanto, member of the general hospital's avian influenza team, said Wednesday that blood tests had confirmed that DS had contracted bird flu. The tests were conducted at the Health Ministry's Development and Observation Laboratory in Jakarta and at Eijkman Laboratory.

Agus said DS, a resident of Jl. Medoho III, Gayamsari, was already in a critical condition when she was transferred to Kariadi General Hospital.

She had a fever of 39 degrees Celsius and acute respiratory problems.

DS's house is near a poultry slaughterhouse.

"This is the first case of bird flu in Semarang this year. In 2007, 27 patients suspected of having bird flu were treated in isolation wards in this hospital. They all survived," Agus said .

Semarang Health Agency head Tatik Suyarti said her office would work to prevent the bird flu spreading to other parts of the city.

Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarip said related institutions had conducted preventive actions such as temporarily closing the poultry slaughterhouse and testing DS's family and neighbors for infection. -- JP
