OGYAKARTA: Dozens of residents of Terong village, Ndlingo district, were attacked by thousands of bees while working in their fields Wednesday.
Eleven residents were sent to a hospital after the attack. Five had to be hospitalized with severe shock and unconsciousness.
One of the victims, Sukiyono, 68, said he and 11 other farmers were working in their fields when a swarm of bees attacked them.
"It happened very fast. The bees suddenly attacked us. We ran for our lives," he said.
Sukiyono said he ran two kilometers and hid in a water tank until the bees went away.
It is believed that the bee attack was due to the disappearance of the forest where the bees built their nests.
Doctor Arif Budiman from Hidayatullah Hospital said most of the hospitalized victims had suffered a severe drop in blood pressure. -- JP
