Ex minister launches memoir

JAKARTA: Former forestry minister Hasjrul Harahap launched his biography titled Hasjrul Harahap, dari Mandor jadi Menteri (Hasjrul Harahap, from a supervisor to a Minister) here Saturday.

The 456-page book, written by Aristides Katoppo and Nina Pane, tries to give readers a glance at his life from his struggle as a child in Sipirok village, North Sumatra, to becoming a minister during former president Soeharto's era from 1988 to 1993.

"I thank everyone who has helped me become what I am right now. I have learned to surrender to God, work hard, never stop studying and be patient," said Hasjrul during the book's launch ceremony, to commemorate his 77th birthday that fell Nov. 18.

Aristides said Hasjrul was a man who saw the diversity of Indonesia's forest as important to preserve.

He said he had learned values of honesty, leadership, tolerance and humility from Hasjrul during the writing process.

Hasjrul expressed concern for rapid deforestation in the country.

"Anyone cutting down trees in the forest is obliged to plant a new one, according to our regulations," he said. -- JP
